World Breastfeeding Week 2014 will be celebrated worldwide 1-7 August 2014.
The 2014 World Breastfeeding Week theme Breastfeeding: A Winning Goal for Life! acknowledges that when mothers and babies succeed in their breastfeeding plans, they can enjoy a lifetime of benefits.
Infant feeding is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and most women who choose to breastfeed have a specific goal in mind. Research shows that babies who receive only breastmilk for the first six months of life are less likely to develop a wide range of chronic and acute diseases, including ear infections, diarrheal diseases, asthma, obesity, and respiratory illnesses. Mothers also benefit from breastfeeding with a decreased risk for breast and ovarian cancers.
To reach the goal of exclusive breastfeeding, mothers need a team of helpers and healthcare professionals to support them.
This breastfeeding team can include family, friends, physicians, nurses, midwives, employers, and childcare providers. Together, the breastfeeding team provides information to boost confidence, protects mothers against critics, gives reassurance, and lends a hand to help breastfeeding mothers succeed.
Team members with special skills and knowledge about breastfeeding, such as a midwife or a Lactation Consultant are especially helpful.
At St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne we provide a full day breastfeeding clinic to provide advice and assistance to mother’s needing additional help to breastfeed their babies. Our Lactation Consultants are available to assist every Mum who delivers her baby with us and after you leave they are also available to speak with over the phone, this is a free service offered to all St Vincent’s Private patients.
This year our Lactation Consultants will host a lunch, inviting our breastfeeding mothers to join with us, to share their own personal stories about breastfeeding or to ask questions to assist them to reach their own personal breastfeeding goals.
