While we celebrate the births of many babies at St Vincent’s Private Maternity and we have the privilege of sharing such a wonderful event in the lives of thousands of families, at times we also need to provide support and compassion to families whose pregnancies end when their baby dies.
The care and support for families facing the loss of a child has changed significantly in recent years. There are many different ways to deal with grief and to assist families who have lost a baby.
Allowing time for parents to hold their baby, dress them, hug them, photograph them and love them can be a powerful time for parents and families who have to say goodbye to a baby that was so loved even before their birth.
For families who choose to spend a few very precious days with their baby, a cuddle cot allows their baby to remain with them in their own room, where previously it would only be with them for short periods of time.
Cuddle Cots are a cooling system that allows the baby to remain cooled within the parents room. Using a Cuddle Cot provides parents with an additional choice about how to say goodbye to their baby. A cuddle cot can reassure parents that they can spend as much time as they like with their baby, without the fear of the baby needing to be cooled in a traditional mortuary.
St Vincent’s Private Maternity has gratefully received a Cuddle Cot, donated by the Emerikus Land Foundation. Emerikus Land was the fifth child of parents Sherri-Leigh and Ben, baby Emerikus died after Sherri-Leigh experienced a placental abruption at the Gold Coast Hospital. Sherri-Leigh and Ben Land started the Emerikus Land Foundation with the aim of donating a Cuddle Cot to every Australian Maternity ward. They have so far donated over 50 cots and continue to provide more Cuddle Cots every month. Along with the donation a package of ‘memory boxes’ were also donated with many special keepsakes and items for parents experiencing baby loss.
St Vincent’s Private Hospital is deeply grateful for the donation of this cuddle cot. The Emerikus Land Foundation rely solely on community fundraising to be able to donate cuddle cots, please visit their facebook page for further details of upcoming events.
